El London Dry Gin nace en realidad como derivado de la ginebra holandesa. La primera receta de la ginebra holandesa fue escrita a mediados del siglo XVII por el Prof. de la Universidad de medicina de Leiden Franciscus “Sylvius” de la Boe. Este medico intentaba obtener un remedio efectivo para los cálculos biliares y afecciones renales mezclando alcohol de obtenido de cebada, centeno y maíz con bayas de enebro. A este nuevo preparado lo llamo “Genievre” (enebro en francés), el producto rápidamente tomo popularidad y la gente comenzó a llamarlo “Genever”. Terminada la Guerra de los Países Bajos, los ingleses llevaron a su patria esta bebida y le apodaron gin. Con el tiempo se fue arraigando la ginebra en la cultura inglesa, dado que a diferencia del resto de los países europeos Inglaterra no tenia una bebida representativa. A esto hay que sumarle los impuestos a las bebidas extranjeras promulgados por Guillermo III de Orange en 1688 y posteriormente por la Reina Anna en 1708. Estas medidas se mantuvieron hasta el año 1742 cuando se decide equiparar los impuestos dado el índice de alcoholismo reinante. Esta medida tomada por la Reina María de Inglaterra, hizo que cayera la mayor parte de la industria quedando solo las fábricas mas fuertes. Posteriormente, un popular fabricante de ginebra, creo el London Dry Gin a mediados del siglo XVIII la adoptaron definitivamente como LA bebida “emblema”inglesa.
